I’m thrilled to announce that Davisville Jr Public School has obtained Gold EcoSchool status for the 2012-2013 academic year!
Among other initiatives, our auditor was impressed with our ongoing efforts to create an outdoor learning garden; eco-literacy on the walls and in reading programs; reducing our energy usage; our families promoting environmental stewardship through participation in a summer maintenance program and ABC/JSA Day; taking part in the Bag 2 School program; the recycled art for the fence; and, our Earth Week events.
We would like to say a special thank you to all the parents that came out to support ABC/JSA Days, the green bake sale and have helped develop and maintain the garden over the summer months. In particular, thank you to Anne M, Anne S, Michelle K, and Tanya M., Reh R. and Racheal D. for their enthusiastic support of the eco-schools program (you made writing grants fun, with your smiles and laughter!). And, of course, a huge thanks to teachers Keverne Cenac-Lopes and Leona Breslaw for heading up the program.
Last week was the official launch of TDSBs Eco-Schools. It was an inspiring meeting filled with ideas to help us meet our goals going forward with the eco-schools programme despite the teachers “pause”. Davisville is very fortunate to have dedicated staff that are working hard from within to promote ecological literacy, environmentally sensitive purchases and keep on top of energy usage and waste minimization.
As parents and members of the community at large, we are encouraged to get involved as much as we can to create a greener, more dynamic and creative environment for our children and neighbours. To meet these expectations, the eco-committee will be working hard on numerous environmentally themed projects both inside and outside Davisville Jr Public School/Spectrum School. These include:
- Continued development & maintenance of an Outdoor Classroom;
- Creation of major art installation, ABC/JSA Days
- Lunch Hour Green Team;
- Web-site development (with the staff).
These projects require communication, research, coordination, fundraising, and in some cases, manual labour! If you would like to get involved with any (or all) of the projects above, please contact me via this web-site or find me at the next official ABC/JSA Day (November 14th!). Any level of participation would be appreciated.
I am absolutely thrilled to announce that Davisville Jr. Public School/MTSD is now a Gold Certified EcoSchool! This is a major achievement for our school. After only one full school year we have achieved significant results in implementing environmental Teamwork and Leadership, Energy Conservation, Waste Minimization, School Ground Greening, Curriculum, Environmental Stewardship.
So many people have been working hard to make the changes necessary to earn this prestigious accreditation. Under the leadership of Mme Cenac, Ms. Breslaw, Mme (Fitzpatrick) Potter and Mme Savelli the children of the eco-club deserve a lot of praise for inspiring the staff and students to watch the waste, turn out the lights and be generally mindful of our impact on the planet.
We also had parents coming out every ABC/JSA day, helping with Earth Week, digging up the dirt in our new garden and cutting waste in our snack programme.
Our efforts to involve students, staff, parents and the community in our greening plan did not go unnoticed and were commended in the audit.
If you would like more information on the EcoSchools certification or would like to get involved in any of our programmes, please contact us.
