I’m thrilled to announce that Davisville Jr Public School has obtained Gold EcoSchool status for the 2012-2013 academic year!
Among other initiatives, our auditor was impressed with our ongoing efforts to create an outdoor learning garden; eco-literacy on the walls and in reading programs; reducing our energy usage; our families promoting environmental stewardship through participation in a summer maintenance program and ABC/JSA Day; taking part in the Bag 2 School program; the recycled art for the fence; and, our Earth Week events.
We would like to say a special thank you to all the parents that came out to support ABC/JSA Days, the green bake sale and have helped develop and maintain the garden over the summer months. In particular, thank you to Anne M, Anne S, Michelle K, and Tanya M., Reh R. and Racheal D. for their enthusiastic support of the eco-schools program (you made writing grants fun, with your smiles and laughter!). And, of course, a huge thanks to teachers Keverne Cenac-Lopes and Leona Breslaw for heading up the program.
Thank you to all who supported the Green Bake Sale today. We had a tremendous amount of green goodies available for our staff and students to buy at all three recesses. Thanks to your generosity we were able to raise just under $600 that will be used to purchase books on the environment and eco-literacy resources for our teachers! Amazing!
I would like to say a special thank you to the volunteers that baked and helped at the sale. Without your help this wouldn’t have happened.
If you did bake but have yet to pick up your containers, they can be found in the family room on the first floor on the window sill.
Thanks again, and don’t forget to have your child wear green on Friday for our final spirit day!
Last week was the official launch of TDSBs Eco-Schools. It was an inspiring meeting filled with ideas to help us meet our goals going forward with the eco-schools programme despite the teachers “pause”. Davisville is very fortunate to have dedicated staff that are working hard from within to promote ecological literacy, environmentally sensitive purchases and keep on top of energy usage and waste minimization.
As parents and members of the community at large, we are encouraged to get involved as much as we can to create a greener, more dynamic and creative environment for our children and neighbours. To meet these expectations, the eco-committee will be working hard on numerous environmentally themed projects both inside and outside Davisville Jr Public School/Spectrum School. These include:
- Continued development & maintenance of an Outdoor Classroom;
- Creation of major art installation, ABC/JSA Days
- Lunch Hour Green Team;
- Web-site development (with the staff).
These projects require communication, research, coordination, fundraising, and in some cases, manual labour! If you would like to get involved with any (or all) of the projects above, please contact me via this web-site or find me at the next official ABC/JSA Day (November 14th!). Any level of participation would be appreciated.
This Wednesday is Anything But Car day! Please try to walk, bike, take transit or bus to school. All participating students will have their hand stamped and get a chance to sign the ABC/JSA day poster board.
Every step we make gets us closer to our eco school goals for a healthier, greener Davisville.
Please check out the Eco-schools page on this site for additional information or to get involved in our eco-programmes.
See you on Wednesday!
